Terms of Service
Beta terms. In force from 6 November 2026, under lawyer review. Details marked “To be completed” are added once they are confirmed and the lawyer has reviewed the text.
1. About these Terms
These Terms apply to SocraChess.ai: the website, the Android and iOS apps and related services (the "Service"). The Service is provided by SOCRACHESS SINGLE MEMBER P.C., Komninon 1, Kavala 65403, Greece, GEMI 197290130000, VAT EL803457290 ("we", "us").
You accept these Terms when you create an account, or when you use the Service without an account where we offer that. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data. If you do not accept the Terms, please do not use the Service.
2. Who can use the Service
You must be at least 18 years old. One account is for one person.
3. What the Service does
SocraChess helps you learn chess. Depending on your plan, you can play against a computer opponent, import games from Chess.com, Lichess or PGN and have them analysed, ask the AI tutor Socrates about moves and positions, follow lessons, solve puzzles and follow your progress. We may change, add or remove features. Before a change that materially reduces what a paid plan includes, we will tell you, and you can cancel.
4. Your account
Give accurate details and keep your password secret. You are responsible for what happens in your account, unless we caused it. Tell us at support@socrachess.ai if you think someone else used it. You can delete your account at any time in My Profile on the website. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone (see the Privacy Policy).
5. Engine analysis and Socrates
- Evaluations and best moves come from the Stockfish chess engine. Socrates explains them in words.
- Socrates' answers are generated by a third-party AI provider. They may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of context, even when the analysis behind them is correct. Check important conclusions on the board.
- The Service is for chess learning and entertainment only. Nothing in it is professional, financial, medical, psychological or other advice.
- Fair play: do not use the Service for help in games you are playing on another site or over the board. Those sites' rules are your responsibility.
6. Independence
SocraChess is an independent service. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Chess.com, Lichess or the Stockfish project. Their names are used only to describe compatibility. The Stockfish engine is free software under the GNU General Public License v3, and your rights under that licence are not limited by these Terms.
7. Plans and allowances
There is a free plan (Free) and paid plans (Pro and Premium). Each plan's features, allowances and price are shown in the app before you buy. Allowances apply per monthly usage period, also on annual plans, and do not roll over. Currently:
- Socrates answers: Free 10, Pro 100, Premium 200.
- New full game reviews: Free 5, Pro 60, Premium 180.
- Game imports: Free 5, Pro and Premium unlimited.
A Socrates answer counts only when it is delivered. "Unlimited" means no fixed number, subject to fair use and the technical limits that protect the Service.
8. Subscriptions, renewal, cancellation and withdrawal
Paid checkout is not open yet. When it opens, these rules apply.
8.1 Who sells. On the website, paid plans are sold by our reseller Paddle (To be completed: Paddle contracting entity), which is the merchant of record. Paddle takes the payment, charges the tax and issues the invoice under its own buyer terms. In the apps, plans are sold through Google Play or the App Store under their terms. Your plan works on the website and in the apps, whichever channel you used.
8.2 Renewal. Subscriptions are monthly or yearly and renew automatically at the price then in force until you cancel. Before you pay you see the price, the billing period and the renewal terms. We announce price changes in advance, and you can cancel before a new price applies.
8.3 Cancellation. Cancel at any time in the channel where you bought: your account settings or Paddle's receipt link for the website; your Google Play or App Store subscriptions for the apps. To stop a store renewal, cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. You keep paid features until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting your SocraChess account does not cancel a store subscription.
8.4 Withdrawal right (EU/UK consumers). When you buy a subscription you ask us to give you access straight away, during the 14-day withdrawal period. You acknowledge that, because the access is supplied immediately, you may lose the statutory right of withdrawal once it begins. This does not affect our own promise: you can get a full refund within 14 days of your first payment for a subscription, without giving a reason (Refund Policy). Apart from that and what the law requires, we do not refund unused parts of a period.
8.5 Store purchases. Refunds of Google Play and App Store purchases follow the store's own rules; ask the store.
8.6 Founding price. If you subscribe during our launch campaign, you keep that price while your paid plan stays active without a break (switching between Pro and Premium counts as active). If a payment fails, is not recovered within 7 days and the plan lapses, the founding price may no longer be available.
8.7 Beta and promotional access. Free access to paid features (for example the beta programme) is shown in the app with its end date or limits. It may end when the programme ends, and it never turns into a paid subscription by itself.
9. App stores
If you downloaded the app from the App Store or Google Play, the store's terms also apply. On iOS, Apple's standard licensed-application end-user licence agreement applies alongside these Terms. Apple and Google are not parties to these Terms and are not responsible for the Service or for support.
10. Your content
Your games, PGN files, notes and messages remain yours. Chess moves themselves are generally not protected by copyright. You allow us to store, copy, analyse and display your content only to provide the Service to you. This includes sending the parts needed for an answer to our AI provider. The permission ends when the content is deleted, except for backup copies that expire on schedule. Only connect usernames that are yours, and only upload content you are allowed to use.
11. Our content
The Service, its software, design, the Socrates character, lessons, puzzles and explanations belong to us or our licensors. You may use them for your own learning inside the Service. You may not copy, scrape, resell or redistribute them. "SOCRACHESS" is the subject of EU trade mark application no. 019428736. Open-source components and open data keep their own licences.
Third-party assets and open-source licences. We thank the authors of the work we use:
- Stockfish chess engine: the Stockfish developers, under the GNU General Public License v3.
- Board piece sets:
- Royal, Diamond and Tournament: drawn for SocraChess by our own designer; they belong to us.
- Chessnut: Alexis Luengas, Apache License 2.0 (source).
- Celtic, Fantasy and Spatial: Maurizio Monge, MIT License (source).
- Kiwen-suwi: neverRare, CC BY 4.0 (source).

- Merida: Armando Hernandez Marroquin, GNU General Public License v2 or later.
- Alpha: Eric Bentzen. Dubrovny and Fresca: sadsnake1 (both via Lichess).
The piece drawings are not changed; the mobile app only converts their file format.
12. Acceptable use
Do not break the law or these Terms. Do not attack, overload or probe the Service. Do not get around limits, security or plan restrictions, for example by creating extra accounts. Do not use bots or scrapers. Do not try to make Socrates produce harmful content or reveal its instructions. Do not share or resell your account. Do not harass our staff. Report illegal content or abuse to support@socrachess.ai.
13. Suspension and ending
We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these Terms, or when the law requires it. Where reasonable we warn you first and tell you why. If we stop offering the Service, we will give reasonable notice and refund prepaid periods you have not used.
14. Liability
- We provide the Service "as is" and "as available". We work to keep it running and correct, but we do not promise that it is uninterrupted, error-free, or that engine or AI output is right in every case.
- We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost data you could have exported, or losses caused by services we do not control (app stores, payment providers, chess sites).
- Our total liability for all claims is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
- Nothing in these Terms limits liability for intent or gross negligence, for death or personal injury, or any right you have under mandatory consumer law.
15. Governing law and disputes
Greek law governs these Terms, and the competent courts of Greece decide disputes. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence, and you may bring a claim in the courts there. You may also contact the Hellenic Consumer Ombudsman (www.synigoroskatanaloti.gr) for out-of-court resolution.
16. Changes to these Terms
If we make a material change, we tell you in the app or by email before it applies. If you do not agree, you can cancel and delete your account before the change takes effect.
